Ouch!! Nappy Rash Is Painful, What Exactly Is It? And What Causes It?

Your baby may experience Nappy rash? this an extremely common complaint in Australia. All babies experience this from a young age, (usually from ages 2 months 12 months old).

Nappy rash is caused by various different reasons. Some causes may be from diapers (cloth and disposable nappies) irritating or rubbing against the skin.

Nappy wipes may also be the cause. The most common cause, is moisture from urine/faeces leaving bacteria over the area.

The rash may also appear if your babies has a cold or a viral infection, or is generally run down. Every babies skin is different, some are more sensitive and prone than others.

A baby that is already prone to Cradle Cap or Eczema, is more likely to experience Nappy Rash.

Another factor to consider, is whether you breast feed or not. If you are bottle feeding your baby, your baby is more likely to experience Nappy Rash.

If you change your babies diet in the first year, EG: changing from breast milk to Milk powder. These factors, may also cause nappy rash in your babies first year.

What exactly are the symptoms ?

If you look and you see redness or irritated & inflamed skin around the genital area, this is definitely nappy rash.

A babies skin also in some cases may blister and peel, the rash may also spread up towards the stomach area.

The best solution to treat nappy rash is to make sure the redness & irritated area is clean & washed after a nappy change.

Apply a natural barrier cream, after a nappy change.

This will stop faeces and urine touching the skin and further irritating the area, we recommend our Baby Care Gold this also lets the skin breathe and heal.

It is also important to look at the types of wipes you are using. and the types of nappies too. When nappies are pulled in too tight, this is also a factor that may cause discomfort on the babies skin.

What Is Fungal Nappy Rash & How Is This Different To ?

Fungal nappy rash can occur, when nappy rash fails to clear up straight away.

If you notice that the rash is bright red, including any bulging patches of skin (pustule) or satellite spots, this is usually a fungal condition.

Check to see if your baby looks unsettled and uncomfortable, with the rash persisting over the skin (for over 2-3 days). If so, this is most probably Fungal Nappy Rash.

When a baby is susceptible to irritants, in disposable nappies, chemical baby wipes or incorrect creams and not being changed, frequently enough. This is how fungal nappy rash can develop.

It is advised, to start applying a antifungal cream. We suggest Baby Care Gold by Mr Bees Manuka, this is natural & perfect to use in these types of situations.

What Should I Do To Confirm The Compliant And How Should I Treat It?

Treatment is extremely important to have a happy baby. First thing, is to look at the types of nappies and wipes you are using.

If the wipes are not natural, I would suggest to move to natural ones. We suggest Wotnot natural wipes (are chemical free and Australian Made).

The next thing is to do, change your baby every 1-2 hours, avoid any build up of urine or faeces on the baby.

Once changing the baby, it is best to wash the baby with luke warm water, use a natural wipe, then let the baby air dry, before applying the barrier cream.

When placing the nappy back on, make sure after applying the kreme, monitor the area to be sure that this treatment is creating improvement. Here is a good article on bleeding and nappy rash.
