Which Natural Deodorant in Australia is Superior & What Should I Use?

History of Deodorants & the Beginning of the Natural Kind 🙂

Deodorant has been around since the late 1880’s, and before this people (ancient Egyptians and other nations) experimented with rubbing ostrich eggs, carrob and porriage balls under their armpits as a way of stopping the odour.

We have come a long way since those times!

The first deodorant was trademarked in 1888 with the name “Mum” and from that time people have developed thousands and thousands of deodorants being good and bad throughout the world.

The first antipersperant one was created in 1903 in America called Everdry and this started the popularity between men and women to place this on there bodies after showering.

Natural deodorant in Australia have become super popular in the past 10-15 years due to the negative ingredients used throughout most store bought brands.

People are becoming more aware of the chemicals that are going through their bodies and through their skin, so moving to a natural brand really is a “no brainer”.

The realisation to consumers that many antipersperant deodorants contain parabens (preservatives) and aluminium (blocking the pores of the skin) is enough to change to a natural brand.

What types of Natural Deodorants in Australia have Available?

There are four main choices when deciding on a natural deodorant

Sprays

Consumers generally like Spray deodorants due to them being a easy application and quick drying. Other people also like to spray other areas of the body being the neck, back of hands (like a perfume).

The downfall is many commercial sprays deodorants contain Aluminium chlorohydrate and aluminium-zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly which are the ingredients that react with the electrolytes in the sweat to form a blockage in the sweat gland.

This then produces a antipersperant over the skin.

There are natural spray deodorants on the market but many are water based with essential oils (not doing a real lot to mask the odour), some that I have researched also have chemicals added with natural oils.

Roll Ons

Are a gel or liquid which is dispensed from a rolling ball.

Most roll ons have a water base so most people find them hydrating on application, some brands are sticky on application and take longer than normal to dry over the skin.

Another downfall to a roll on is that after it has dried your armpits can have a pasty residue.

Many Roll On deodorants have aluminium the same as a lot of sprays and this is something to watch out for. Always good to check the ingredients on the back of the product.

Sticks

Are a solid form or also come a gel form.

The Gel type roll up through holes in the applicator and go on wet onto the skin, where solids Stick deodorants are popular due to the portability, and are very similar in look to a lip balm and depending on what brand you use can be quite hard in texture when applying.

If they are made too hard they may be clumpy on application and not smooth to apply.

Stick deodorants are available in natural and non natural forms, and many people like the convenience of of it being in a stick for easy application.

Like the roll ons and sprays, it is advisable to check on the ingredients for natural and non natural ingredients.

Deodorant Paste

( Moisturiser Cream ) Is in a form of a moisturiser that is rubbed into the skin with either your finger or applicator.

Most are produced like a cream or a balm that are normally used over the skin and used under the armpits the same way.

As this is a fairly new concept some people are not used to touching their armpit, but after trying it are normally ok with it.

Most deodorant pastes have natural ingredients but it is wise to check the back for the ingredient list.

3 Ingredients to Watch Out For in a Deodorant (Even in Natural Ones So Good to Have Awareness)

Aluminium

Is the most common ingredient in antiperspirants. There have been studies conducted around the world that link aluminium to Alzheimers, Cancer and hormone imbalance, the evidence though has not been proven. The main concern is the blockage of the skin cells (or clogging up) which prevents your body to sweat, and holds this inside which is a unnatural process.

Parabens

Are a preservative which basically prolongs shelf life in deodorants and skincare products by stopping bacteria and mold from growing and expanding. The names you should avoid when checking the label are butylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben as these are the most common ones found. Research into Parabens has found that they can disrupt how the biological system works, and have said that it can cause skin to deterioriate, also linking to skin disorders and allergic reaactions in some people.

Triclosan

Is a ingredient added to products including soaps, toothpastes and skincare. It is used to reduce bacterial contamination. Some short- term studies have shown exposure to high doses is associated to triclosan decreases the levels of thyroid hormones in your system. In some studies Triclosan has been linked to skin disorders including dermatitis and skin rashes and irritations. The United States FDA have banned this ingredient from household soap products from 2016

Please note: If in doubt of a ingredient in a product, just Google it and see for yourself if it is good or bad.

Which Natural Deodorant Should I try Out & Which One Is the Best?

There are many natural deodorants on the market out there. With so much choice how do you know which one to use, I say check the ingredients.

If you have sensitive skin, like many people I have spoken to over the years, these people have reactions to deodorants that contain baking soda, and many natural deodorants do contain this ingredient, so it is advisable to keep an eye out for this particular ingredient (mr bees does not use this ingredient).

Mr Bees Manuka has been making skincare in Australia since 2015. Odourless Citrus and Lime is a natural deodorant paste is free from the above being Aluminium, any Parabens and Triclosan. Our deodorant is also made free from Baking Soda which I have found alot of people have allergic reactions to.
